Mary Mary quite contrary, how does your garden grow? Do you know that nursery rhyme?
Well lets just talk about gardens for a bit. I am a novice when it comes to gardening yet I am the daugher of someone who was a pro when it came to growing things. My Dad had a huge garden when I was a little girl in which we had EVERYTHING. i thought it was perfectly normal to go up to the garden and get the vegetables for that night's dinner for my Mum. She'd put her order in and Dad and I would come back with it for her. There was every vegetable you can think of as well as grapes, blackberries, apple and pear trees, gooseberrys and I even whipped a few plums from our neighbors plum tree that conveniently hung over our fence!!!
So a few years ago I thought I'd grow something - onions, shallots, brussel spouts - why we grew the latter i've no idea because I can't stand sprouts but Doug thought it would be a good idea......we ended up having sprouts coming out of our ears!!! Last year I had a sucessful crop of potatoes. From four seed potatoes I ended up with around 10 pounds of those wonderful things along with carrots and parsnips.
THIS year i thought i'd grow a smaller amount of a wider variety of produce so off I went to the farm to buy my plants, I bought peppers; sweet, bell and something called chocolate peppers (they have to be good!) I also bought two types of tomatoes, zucchini and cabbage. The cabbage were interesting - I planted red cabbage, white cabbage and a third variety that i can't remember the name of but in the garden they went.
Everything seemed to be growing beautifully - especially as my Dad (the expert) arrived in time to give it the professional touch but that third variety of cabbage were growing in a rather strange way. Both Dad and I commented on them. They were much taller than the other cabbages and not growing any kind of head like a cabbage should. Well weeks went by and I went out there with a hose pipe to water everything but i never really took much notice - i try not to 'watch my garden grow' if you know what i mean.
Well then along came a few days of rain, 'marvelous' I thought 'I don't have to water' - I was also very busy so I didn't really go out to the garen until the weekend. As I approached my raised beds I said out loud 'those are some of the weirdest cabbages i've ever seen in my life!' and then i stopped in my tracks because there, in all their green glory were three of the largest heads of broccoli you've ever seen!! I swear they were smiling at me saying 'ha ha ha - had you fooled there for a minute'! So much for labelling on plants but I have to say, I'm delighted to have a large crop of broccoli which I have since frozen and the second lot is growing through as we speak!
Oh yes my friends....when it comes to gardening, I know EXACTLY what i'm doing......................NOT!!
Hope you all have lovely weekends!
