I'm sorry folks but this dinner/dance is not going ahead due to lack of ticket sales.
Frankly i'm not surprised and tried very hard to persuade the new owners to just let us play the lounge like we always did but they were 'nervous' about doing this.
I tried to tell them that we always had a great crowd. Its a pity they weren't witness to it before they took the place over. Anyway, it's worth a visit whether i'm there or not and if you do go - maybe put a bug in their ear and lets see if we can persuade them!! More info...

Cupholders!

'Ello 'ello 'ello!
And thank you to you all for sending me your advice on how to deal with the bird who has fallen in love with his reflection. It seems he has found another mate and has abandoned the chimney pot for something better!.....men are so fickle aren't they?!
So this week I want to talk about cupholders - yes, that's right cupholders and the apparent obsession with cupholders here in the U.S. When I first moved here I got to travel in various different vehicles - this was chiefly because I had not been let loose to drive on the wrong side of the road unsupervised so people were driving me around instead. I was AMAZED and AGHAST at just how many cupholders a car manufacturer could put in one car....they were everywhere! One would push a drawer and OH! out would pop a cupholder then you'd pull down a lever and oh, there's another one! Did you hear the story about the gentleman who called his computer helpline complaining that the cupholder has snapped off and he wanted to know how to get it fixed? 'I'm sorry sir' said the helpline man 'but we don't have cupholders on our computers, was this something you bought as a special promotion?'
'No, it came as part of the standard equipment' replied the man.
'But our computers don't come with cupholders'
Well pardon me sunshine but they do' says the man 'I'm looking at mine right now. You push a button and it slides right out!' Of course you realise that the man had been using his CD drawer to hold his coffee cup!
Cupholders really did not exist in Britain but believe me they are on the way! This is chiefly because we drive stick-shift vehicles and therefore there is a lack of limbs with which to operate things with that aren't already operating the vehicle (what a concept!)
On an American car if you push an unfamiliar button generally a cupholder will slide out, rise out, drop down or otherwise magically enter your life!
It's almost impossible to play down the importance of cupholders - in a recent survey that the New York Times ran they tested a dozen cars for various important things like trunk space, handling, safetly, suspension and yes, cupholders! A car dealer friend of mine says it's one of the first things people comment on or play with when they look at a car - I know from experience cause when I bought my most recent car Douglas commented on two things - the hood scoop (a silly cosmetic thing that has no purpose whatsoever) AND the ADJUSTABLE oh yes, I said adjustable cupholders!!
One car that will remain nameless comes with no less than seventeen cupholders. Seventeen!! This car holds seven passengers so you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that that is 2.43 cupholders per person!
And here's another thing - I read that a few years ago Volvo had to redesign all it's cars for the American market because Volvo's engineers foolishly thought that what buyers were looking for was a reliable engine, side impact bars and heated seats - WRONG!...they need cupholders to put their coffee in so a couple of German guys got to it, re designed the car and saved Volvo from financial ruin!!
Of course, as a fellow American (I like saying that!) we do spend an enourmous amount of time in our vehicles - something like 94% of trips from home involve a car (the figure in Britain is something like 60% which is bad enough) so we like our gadgets and home comforts.
Personally i'm on a crusade to have foot massagers built into the accelerator pedal and a button that I press where by a bar of chocolate will magically appear out of the arm rest already unwrapped and ready to eat!
I was thinking that someone should design a cupholder for my microphone stand - one that would adjust to hold a wine glass, martini glass, water glass - i think it's a great idea after all they have cupholders on strollers and all sorts of other things don't they?!
Actully, I'm pretty low maintenance when it comes to cars - I just need a place to put my chocolate bar and .....oh my gosh...I'm going to say it..........my cup of tea! Where would we be without cupholders? - I love 'em!!
Hope to see you soon!
