CD - Sheraton - Erie - Downtown Kent!!

Hello everyone!

Well things are really hotting up on the CD front. We recorded 3, 4 hour sessions with piano, bass, drums and guitar, after that we did a 2 hour session with the string quartet, followed by a 4 hour session with the horns. After this in came the percussionist for 4 hours who added some wonderful 'color' in the form of timbales, congas, tambourine e.t.c.
The next week or so was spent adding what we call 'pads' and that included hammond, keyboards and other added extras. Once that was done I went about writing the backing vocals which are included on about 7 or 8 of the songs. That took a few days of planning and then into the studio I went. What we do is what's called 'stacking' the vocals. I sing the first harmony line, and then add the second, third and so on. This took about 10 hours of recording time.
Rock (Werhmann) and I then listened to all the soloists and went about choosing which solos we'd like to use. We ask our soloists to lay down at least 3 or 4 choices for me - each one of course is different. Soloists include the wonderful Jack Schantz and Howie Smith (who both played solos on my last CD), Bryan Thomas, Rock Werhmann, Bob Fraser on guitar and ME! Yes I braved it and got my flute out so there is a flute solo too, all be it short!

Now we are entering into my favorite part of the process and I shall spend the next 12 to 16 hours of studio time laying down the main vocals. To have everything else in place BEFORE hand I believe makes for a much better performance - I'm hoping to have that completed by August 7th and then we begin mixing the CD and balancing all those colors. It's a bit like making a cake - you add the ingredients and then stir - so the mixing is exactly that!!
We are hoping to complete mixing by Aug 20th and then the CD will go for mastering. The tracks are shaped, sculpted, scooped, equalized, compressed, and finessed into sonic splendor (well, you hope) through the audio process known as mastering. Mastering is what gives depth, punch, clarity and volume to the tracks and is the final process before the CD goes to be duplicated.
In the meantime I have to endure my least favorite part of making a CD - having my photo taken!!
We are hoping to use the wonderful Akron Civic as our location, and then the photos go off to the graphic designer who will make up a first draft CD booklet and back cover for me to work with.
Ah - its a longer process than you thought perhaps?! Hopefully it will be worth it!
I will let you know as and when we plan to have a CD launch party!
Hope to see you this weekend at the Sheraton!
