Akron Symphony

Circa 1960. Saturday May 15th
Downtown Akron will be transformed into the hip, retro world of the early 1960s, popularized by the award-winning AMC television show Mad Men.

The Symphony’s annual gala and concert will celebrate the style and music of the Mad Men era beginning with cocktails, dinner, and a selection of exciting, one-of-a-kind live and silent auction items at the newly-renovated Greystone Hall, aka the evening’s “Ultra Lounge 103.”

After dinner, the Akron Symphony Orchestra will join multi-talented actor, singer, composer, and entertainer Michael Andrew for a concert at the Akron Civic Theatre featuring the music of such 60s icons as Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, and many others. Local favorite Helen Welch will also perform with the ASO and Mr. Andrew.

Forward to a Friend

If in doubt, give it a clout!

Good morrow to you all!
Do you use the expression 'if in doubt, give it a clout' in America? It's a much used phrase in ol' blighty (that's England to you!) and means, if the thing doesn't work -HIT IT! And usually I have to tell you, this theory works. This Saturday we are playing at Crossings in Aurora and last time we were there Rock's keyboard decided to not work. He turned it off, turned it on, turned it off, turned it on and nothing happened. Just lots of flashing lights and me saying 'there's cling ons on the starboard bow!'but the stupid thing would not work.
Now I'm a little short on patience and I started to get 'itchy' but this was not my equipment. Five minutes went by and I couldn't hold myself back any longer, 'HIT IT!' I said. Rock looked at me as if I was crazy and I said it again 'go on hit it!'. Well after a short thought he picked up the end of the keyboard and gave it a firm slap. BAM! on came the lights and on came the keyboard!!
Last week however whilst on a trip to Brookfield Ohio by way of my GPS (which I'm absolutely in love with) my 'if in doubt give it a clout' theory failed :-(
I arrived at my destination thanks to the marvelous GPS machine but forgot to turn it off when i parked. Arriving back at the car an hour or so later I was dismayed to find that the GPS had of course run out of battery and the screen was blank. I grabbed the end of the charger and plugged it in, waited about 20 seconds and then tried to turn the GPS on. It should have come on immediately; after all it was now plugged into the charger......the screen stubbornly remained blank. I waited and waited - i fiddled with the charger, I fiddled with the plug that went into the GPS - nothing.
I was in the middle of no where and I had absolutely no idea how to get home. "I know" I thought, " I call Doug" so I did that but I couldn't tell him where I was! I told him the stupid (for that's what it was now) GPS would not turn on and he said 'well you're just going to have to stop at a garage and ask for directions" !!! CAN YOU BELIEVE A MAN SAYING THAT?!!!! I could hold myself back no longer and WHACK! I hit the GPS....nothing, no response. WHACK, WHACK, WHACK..............still no response. Now i'm getting a little frantic cause i don't want to break it WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK! still nothing.
"Right that's it!" I say "you're going straight back to the store when i get home" (as if threatening it was going to help) and I start to drive down a country road. I keep driving - for about 5 miles infact and there was no garage in sight. I'm beginning to panic and call Doug again who is still laughing :-) !! As I'm putting on my pathetic-girl-I'm-really-lost-will-you-come-and-save-me voice I take hold of the curly wire that belongs to the charger and for some reason I pull it. UP POPS the other end - not plugged into anything whatsoever!! It's then I realise my error - I'd plugged the phone charger into the car and the GPS charger was just sitting between the seats - one end plugged into the GPS, one end on the floor!! I plug it in, press the on button and guess what?!..............it came on!!!
I apologised profusely to the GPS machine and tell it how much I love it again as it politely says 'turn left and take the motorway' (yes mine says motorway not freeway) and I wing my way home!!
Hope to see you Saturday in Aurora - enjoy the sunshine!
