Circa 1960. Saturday May 15th
Downtown Akron will be transformed into the hip, retro world of the early 1960s, popularized by the award-winning AMC television show Mad Men.
The Symphony’s annual gala and concert will celebrate the style and music of the Mad Men era beginning with cocktails, dinner, and a selection of exciting, one-of-a-kind live and silent auction items at the newly-renovated Greystone Hall, aka the evening’s “Ultra Lounge 103.”
After dinner, the Akron Symphony Orchestra will join multi-talented actor, singer, composer, and entertainer Michael Andrew for a concert at the Akron Civic Theatre featuring the music of such 60s icons as Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, and many others. Local favorite Helen Welch will also perform with the ASO and Mr. Andrew.

The planes are landing!....

Firstly a BIG THANK YOU to all of you who came to the Akron Civic last Thursday.
I have reported the sound difficulties to the theatre and they hope to resolve them if we ever do it again. Still it was a fun night - great to see you all and what a fabulous venue!!!
Doug and I have been busy in the yard or garden as we call it in England, what a glorious time of year it is. He LOVES playing in the mud and I don't mind being his assistant although I'm not interested in doing anything that requires any imagination. So- i'm happy to rake leaves, pick up sticks oh and I do have a rock garden that we call Welch Henge (after Stone Henge!) that has some pretty hefty rocks and lovely plants in it. I think that's where this all started.....
A couple of years ago Doug decided he wanted to light up some of the rocks in the rock garden (they really are huge!) so he bought some garden lights.
He carefully placed them round the garden, burying the wire as he went. It was quite a task but looked lovely when we lit them up. Then last year when we were in Michigan on vacation we drove to the beach to watch the sunset. We parked by one of the lake front hotels and there, hanging in the tree were three cracked glass globes - all lit up and looking quite beautiful. Doug and I were really taken with these glass balls - mesmorised I would say so we got out of the car to have a closer inspection and discovered that they were solar powered. What a great idea!
When we arrived home Doug did some internet research and found them on line. We ordered about 6 of them plus a couple more to give as gifts to our neighbors. They did look lovely in the trees at night we even hung one by the hot tub and because the glass is cracked it spreads this wonderful dappled light over the area.
Not long after the snow had gone I saw Doug with a number of boxes. He was smiling sheepishly but I thought nothing of it. The following evening he said 'look out in the garden!' so I did and he'd added a few more solar powered lights only this time he'd bought ones that stick in the ground.
'We won't need those ones that I wired in anymore' he said 'and it's great cause when I mow I can just pull the solar powered ones out of the ground!
'Thats great' I said and it really did look lovely.
The next day Doug said 'look out in the garden!' (sound familiar?)and yes, you've guessed it...more lights. The yard was looking very pretty and he seemed content with his work. About a week goes by and Doug suddenly announces over breakfast, 'i need my lighting assistant to help me please!' (that's me in case you were wondering) and I went out in the garden to find that he'd bougt even more lights!...about 24 of them IN ADDITION to the ones we already had in the ground.
The following evening arrived and oh my goodness - it looked like Fairy Land! I've had to say at this point that 'I think we have enough now darling don't you?!' and keep my fingers crossed that he agrees. You see I'm concerned - I swear I keep looking up to the sky and I see airplanes circling over our property.! The flight deck are obviously looking for Akron Canton airport but because we are so lit up it wouldn't surprise me if a Boeing 747 lands in the drive way mistaking our garden for the runway!
